Charlie Chaplin Guided Walk!

Charlie Chaplin was British and maintained British citizenship throughout his entire life, despite spending most of his adulthood in America. Born in Kennington, London on April 16, 1889, he resided there until he turned 21. Born into and experiencing his formative years in extreme poverty in what was then one of the poorest districts of London. In his teenage years, he joined an acting troupe based in neighboring Brixton; while touring the United States, he caught the attention of a talent scout from Sennett Studios, which led to his signing—and the rest is history! Over the course of his career, primarily during the silent film era, he starred in 81 movies, portraying his iconic "Little Tramp" persona in 76 of them. Chaplin’s life epitomizes the quintessential rags-to-riches narrative, and his impoverished childhood profoundly shaped his filmmaking style. During this walking tour, I will narrate his journey through these very streets, highlighting key locations that inspired him, including homes where he grew up, and detailing the living conditions prevalent in late Victorian London. You’ll learn about his complex relationship with his mentally unstable mother, his estranged alcoholic father, and the deep connection he shared with his half-brother Sidney.
