Sea Turtle Conservation

Healthy oceans need sea turtles. Sea turtles are a keystone species, meaning they are an essential part of their environment and have an impact on other species around them. When a keystone species is removed from its habitat, the natural balance can become disturbed, affecting other wildlife and fauna in various ways. This project aims to prevent the extinction of sea turtles and critically endangered species. Volunteers assist with rehabilitating and releasing turtles who often fall victim to commercial fishing activities. In addition to tending to wounded or ill sea turtles, volunteers participate in nest protection and egg rescue operations ensuring these hatchlings reach adulthood safely. Daily tasks involve maintaining cleanliness at the beaches and surrounding areas while learning more about the diverse types of turtles present. This program primarily focuses on safeguarding both the eggs and newborn turtles, thereby increasing their numbers over time. It entails defending against threats posed by predators and poaching; creating secure environments conducive to nesting; nurturing infant, ailing, and hurt turtles; offering regular meals; and finally setting free those deemed fit enough to return to the wild once fully recovered. However, despite being crucial components of effective marine life preservation programs like ours, several challenges arise concerning community involvement in such endeavors. These obstacles encompass low levels of enthusiasm within native populations, insufficient funding allocated toward outreach campaigns, limited comprehension regarding environmental issues amongst organizers/participants due to differing socio-cultural backgrounds etc., all contributing factors hindering progress made thus far...

The programme orientation can take place on any convenient date for you. Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport by a member of staff from What’s Included On-site Services Programme fees include: Airport transfer (pick up) Project orientation Comfortable and secure accommodation Transport to projects where needed Contribution to the project Meals (breakfast, lunch and evening meal) Local support available 24 hours per day Guidance about travel during the whole duration of the placement Certificate upon successful completion of the project Meet & Greet Service at Bandaranaike International Airport Your pickup service will be arranged using a private vehicle offering comfortble transport directly to our guest house or homestay facility. Once we have received confirmation of your flights, one of the NVDP volunteers will arrange collection and delivery services between the airport and your chosen accommodations located within Ambalangoda or Kosgoda areas. These transfers are included in your programme cost therefore incurring no additional charges; however every effort shall be made to ensure timely arrivals. Whilst unforeseen circumstances beyond our control may cause delays e.g., heavy congestion on roads etc.; rest assured all efforts will always be directed towards meeting scheduled times promptly. Please also remember that due to security restrictions access to the terminal building itself is prohibited hence pickups must occur immediately adjacent to the exit hall entrance bearing clearly displayed signage featuring the NVDP logos. As this location does not cover much space finding each other shouldn’t prove difficult. Accommodations All participants staying here choose to reside with carefully selected host families situated close to their assigned work locations. While living conditions offered tend toward simplicity they remain perfectly adequate providing guests with both warmth and hospitality while ensuring safety and privacy too.
