Ceves Tour

The Algar do Carvão, classified as a Natural Monument, is located inside the Guilherme Moniz caldera, at an altitude of 640 meters, approximately 12 kilometers from the city of Angra do Heroísmo. It is a remarkable volcanic cavity whose geological and speleological importance has been rightly highlighted by various national and foreign specialists. Following a trachyte eruption that occurred long ago, a new eruption, this time basaltic, ripped open the pre-existing lava flow and initiated a process that led to the formation of a Strombolian volcano, comprising two cones, with its upper part made up of slag resulting from a highly productive effusion phase characterized by extremely fluid lavas. Within the cavern, you can see the domes formed by the attempted exits of the lava, along with certain basalt "lids" that continue to cling stubbornly to the original rock. As a result of the interaction between water and the inner ceiling of this impressive hollowed-out volcanic conduit, iron oxide (rust) and silicon dioxide deposits are visible. Among these features, the existence of silica stalactites particularly draws the visitor's eye and piques their interest even more. Other forms originating during the creation of the Algar may be observed within; towards the base, there is a little pool adding extra charm to the grotto. This algar’s splendor extends beyond just its natural wonders—it boasts unique plant life covering the walls of the volcanic shaft where numerous bird species find shelter.
