Highlights of Alexandria City Day Tour

This historical tour of the Old downtown of Alexandria, so called because it was founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, will allow you to discover lesser-visited sites that are not typically included on standard tours; these include a panoramic view of the old Eastern City Harbor, the little-known hidden galleries beneath St. Mark’s Cathedral, the largest and oldest mosque in the city, and—optionally—a taste of local cuisine. Start your day with pickup from your hotel accommodations in a comfortable vehicle. The driver will transport you to your first stop, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. These subterranean tombs date back to the second century AD. Then continue to Pompey’s Pillar, also known as the Temple of Serapis, constructed in the 2nd century BC and originally devoted to the chief deity of Ancient Alexandria. From here we proceed to the Roman Amphitheatre, established in the third century AD within what used to be a fully functioning Roman community. Your chauffeur takes you for a brief detour to the Church of St. Mark, home to the largest Coptic Orthodox cathedral in the city. You’ll next travel to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina – a contemporary structure erected near its historic predecessor. Take time to admire this architectural marvel before exploring the museum’s state-of-the-art exhibition spaces. Finally head towards Citadel of Qaitbey - a fortress originating from the fifteenth century AD located where once stood the famous Pharos Lighthouse.
